What is CBD Oil? Important Facts You Need to Know

As research into cannabis advances around the world, more and more people are asking what is CBD and what is CBD oil?

What is CBD?

Cannabis is going through an amazing growth period around the world. As many countries and states move towards the legalization of cannabis for both recreational and medicinal purposes, this growth is fueling research into the medical properties of the hemp plant. For centuries cannabis has been applied as a medicinal herb; it was only the early 1970s that the U.S. and other governments around the world reclassified it as a narcotic. Now, research is uncovering that there is much more to cannabis than we ever thought! The hemp plant contains compounds known as cannabinoids which interact with a range of receptors in the human body, binding with them and altering biochemical processes. This collection of receptors is known as the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. While research is still underway to fully understand the many functions of the ECS, anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that some cannabinoids, such as CBD, are able to produce positive effects in the general health and wellbeing of the human mind and body.

What is CBD Oil?

Cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, and CBDa are naturally-occurring oils found in the hemp plant. After the plants are grown and harvested, these oils can be extracted from the rest of the plant matter using a variety of techniques. For example, heating and pressing plant material can result in a sticky extract called rosin that contains terpenes and full cannabinoid profiles. More refined extraction methods using solvents can be used to provide higher cannabinoid purities. A CBD oil is an extract containing CBD that has been dissolved into a carrier oil (such as coconut) to produce a tincture or other CBD product that is easily digested and absorbed into the body, or that can be applied topically. CBD oils may be made using a very pure CBD extract or isolate, or they may be made using a broad or full spectrum extract so that the final product includes other cannabinoids in addition to CBD. When multiple cannabinoids are combined, they produce a synergistic effect and may have a greater impact on the endocannabinoid system. Koi Naturals CBD Tinctures contain broad-spectrum hemp extract, meaning that all of the cannabinoids present in the hemp plant, excluding THC, are included in the final product. This CBD oil is designed to provide the synergistic cannabinoid effect without the ‘high’ associated with THC.

What about THC?

THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid responsible for the intoxicating effects associated with smoking marijuana, is just one of many  cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Koi CBD products contain no detectable THC, meaning that 3rd-party testing laboratories do not detect concentrations of THC in our products above their detection limits of 10 microgram per gram of product, or less. What does this mean to you? It means that you won’t get high from our broad-spectrum products. It’s also the reason that CBD is legal in over 40 countries around the world. Although THC can be removed from hemp extracts in a laboratory, it is becoming more common that extracts are made from low-THC hemp plants that have been generated through crossbreeding of low-THC plants. This means less tampering in the lab and improved production of extracts containing higher levels of other cannabinoids.

Choosing The Optimal Strength of CBD Oil

At Koi CBD, we understand that no two people are the same, and that the amount of CBD that works for one person might not be right for another. It is for this reason that we produce tinctures and other CBD products with varying amounts of CBD.  For example, our Koi Naturals CBD Tinctures are available in Strawberry, Peppermint, Orange, Lemon-Lime, Spearmint, and Natural flavors, and in strengths of 250 mg, 500 mg, 1000 mg, and 2000 mg per bottle. Our 60mL spray bottles are available in 1500mg and 3000mg strengths. We also have general serving suggestion information available on our website, but ultimately your serving size will be up to your personal preferences. It’s important that you take it slowly and work out what milligram level you’re comfortable with. Before stopping any current medications, it’s important that you speak with your healthcare professional.
