When it comes to CBD, getting as much information as possible gets you closer to finding the right CBD products and the expected experience and effects. One of the several factors you must consider before purchasing any CBD products is the type of cannabis plant your CBD is extracted from. There are multiple strains to choose from, but two stand out; Sativa and Indica. Beyond the different names, they have other physical characteristics and effects, which will determine the end consumers’ impact.

What is Sativa?

Sativa is a strain common in Russia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Most hemp varieties grown for their stalk and fibre rather than the flower are often classified as cannabis Sativa. This strain is taller with a flowering time that ranges from 10 to 14 weeks. The branches of the Sativa plant are spaced, and the buds and flowers are less dense.

Cannabinoids

Sativas contain more THC than CBD and have some prominent terpenes, including limonene and beta-caryophyllene. Sativas from equatorial regions are high in tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV).

Effects

One of the reasons why you should consider the strain is because each strain has different effects. Sativa strains contain THC and have a uniquely uplifting and make the consumer feel creatively inspired and able to conquer any challenge. The effects of Sativas also depend on the region the plant is grown, which also dictates its content. Varieties containing THCV with CBD, pinene, limonene, and beta-caryophyllene have more energising effects. These are varieties often grown in the equatorial regions such as Mozambique Poison and Durban.

When To Use Sativas

You can leverage the benefits of Sativa to deliver its effects when you need them most. The best time to use Sativas is during the day, especially in the morning, because of its energising effects. However, using Sativas in the evening can disrupt your sleep pattern because of its potent uplifting effects.

Popular Sativa Strains

Some of the common Sativa strains:
  • Durban Poison
  • Trainwreck
  • Blue Dream
  • Super Silver Haze
  • Strawberry Cough

What is Indica?

The Indica strain is from Afghanistan and India. Because of these areas' harsh, mountainous conditions, this type tends to be short and stout in size. Indicas also grow well in more temperate climates but have a shorter flowering time of 6-9 weeks.

Cannabinoids

The cannabinoid profile of Indica strains comprises high levels of THC (similar to the concentration of Sativas). However, some varieties also have high amounts of CBD. The plants also have high concentrations of certain terpenes like linalool, myrcene, limonene and beta-caryophyllene.

Effects

The effects of Indica varieties are very different from Sativas. Sativas make you feel outgoing and uplifted, while Indicas have a more laidback feeling that makes you want to stay indoors. The higher CBD content in Indicas makes them more suitable to most consumers with more relaxing and calming effects. However, it’s important to note that these are mere observations for most consumers. The actual effects of Indica varieties vary and interact differently with different people. Other factors like the environment the plant grew in (the temperature, humidity, altitude, type of soil, etc.), the point at which it was harvested in its flowering cycle, and the amount of light received make a difference in the cannabinoid composition of the plant and therefore, the effects it can produce. Choosing The Right Strain Variety for You

The strain that works for you comes down to various factors, including how your body responds to the different varieties, the times you prefer to take your CBD products and the reasons for taking the products. The best way to find the best variety for you is to look at the test results on the packaging or the manufacturer’s website and try out a few products yourself. When trying out the products, always start with a low serving which allows you to monitor how your body responds without worrying about the intensity of the effects. Always go for reputable brands known for quality products to ensure you get legally compliant and high-quality products.
